so my hard drive started clicking last week and I started receiving blue screens. I feel rather ignorant on the matter. I had backed up most of my files however during my recent crash I had a bunch open with recent updates. i also wanted to recover my bookmarks which I do not believe I took time to back up. Now when I boot IF I get to any kind of windows screen there is no login option; it's just a blue screen with what I would describe as rays of light coming down from the top (not sure if this is some standard error screen. ) . A couple of time the HP reformat came up. I'm looking for any advice on this. Just want to get the last of my files and bookmarks. A link to wha tI do next would be good too....can I use my operating system key again on a new hard drive ? I'm new to this. thank you.
Few ideas come to mind...can I start the computer with a defrag somehow?
Sometimes when I start the computer I get a black screen with some writing and it ends with something along the lines of S.M.A.R.T. system:

thanks to everyone for helping this teacher out :)

Solution
well if you know someone with the same laptop you could borrow theirs. Contact the manufacturer and purchase your factory disks. Buy Windows new.

You need to stop using the pc NOW! The more you use it the more damage to the drive you could be doing.

Basically you will be doing the following:
Get and install another drive. Install your windows. {hopefully you created your factory/restore disk set or made a full backup at some point}
When you are ready to attempt recovery use Recuva. Be sure you have enough space on your new (or backup drive) to recover any data to, You never recover back to the same drive you are recovering from.

The 'bad' drive can either be mounted internally to the pc or you can purchase a usb adapter/enclosure for it.
