Hi,

My uncle recently got scammed for a lot of money online and I am trying to find the location of the scammer as they need to be stopped. Please can you help me in any way? information regarding anything can help! any links to tutorials / pages. So far I have used the 'show original' email tab in GMAIL and have located what I am assuming is the IP address? (Im a newbie at this so not a clue)

X-Received: from mr.google.com ([10.50.66.131])

by 10.50.66.131 with SMTP id f3mr27900913igt.17.1419744524749 (num_hops = 1);

I'm guessing 10.50.66.131 is the IP address?

If so how can i track this??

(If im posting in the wrong area / website - please point me in the right direction)

Thanks!

EDIT: Ah I have just read 'note that if you receive an email sent from a Gmail account through the web browser, you may not be able to find the real IP address because Google hides the real IP address of the sender. '
This was through a site so it looks like im going to need to get a email directly from the scammer.

That IP won't do you any good, an IP that starts with 10. is an internal IP that is only relevant inside the building it's used in.

My company uses a 10. IP also, your home usually would have a 192 address used the same way.

Either case, leave the tracking down to the proper authorities, FBI usually covers cybercrime.
Pass it to the authorities... generally all you'll get from an email is the email SERVER (that sent the email through it) IP address.
You'll need to ask the email SERVER for any more logging information...

and it looks a bit like that IP is spoofed somehow, anyway...? no such address as mr.google.com (from what I can tell)

Easier to try to scam them back.
"reply" to one of their emails (like they know who they sent it to...) and try and get some details from them

It would be best if you just leave it at the current stage and contact law enforcement authorities as soon as possible.
The authorities have greater access to information from corporations like Google or Microsoft who host the email services, therefore can investigate more efficiently and completely.

Good luck!
