[SOLVED] trying to upgrade my CPU on a Dell Inspiron 3847 Tower

I am trying to upgrade my CPU on a Dell Inspiron 3847 Tower. One manual list three different type's of CPU's that may (or may not) have been installed on various desktop systems. My system contains the following:

A couple of years ago) I added EVGA 500w PSU along with Nvidia GTX 950 graphics card.

I cannot find any information on this Motherboard (manufacturer) or number that would link me to compatible Quad Core Intel i5 (4th Generation) upgrade. I have delved into the inner works and no soap. No other name listed on the board itself. So…......can someone point me in the right direction so I may complete this process?

The motherboard supports up to an i7-4770/4790. I think you will need to update the bios to support haswell refresh CPUs like the i7-4790 or i5-4590/4690 which are also supported.

Intel Quad Core i7 (4th Generation)
You can put non-k procesor's in there.

I have a 4790k in my 3020 SFF and it made a pretty big difference.

I didnt know you can put k procesors in OEM mother boards.I had a lenovo thinkcentre edge 72 and yiu cant put kverclockable cpus in there.Thats why i got i7 3770 instead of the k version

That's been the case for a long time, some manufacturers allow it.

Thank you for the information. The BIOS upgrade is done after the installation of the CPU correct? Also…I saw somewhere that the CPU has to match LGA 1150 pin...correct?

You would update the bios first with the original working CPU still in the system before pulling it out and upgrading to the new CPU. You don't need to update the bios to support an i5-4590, i7-4790K or other compatible CPUs, since your bios version was released in 2018 and haswell refresh was released in 2014. You should be able to use any i5/i7 4000 series CPU.

Oh you almost always can. It's just usually not useful as there is no overclocking capability. In the case of the 4790k though with its base 4Ghz clock, it really is a big boost even in stock form.

Thanks for that info. As it turned out installed BIOS was ver A09. Updated to A11. Now I wait for the CPU to arrive to begin the upgrade process.
