purchased an adapter cable -parallel port to USB. However, when connected to my desktop windows 7 64bit system, a standard usb printer driver gets loaded - and the printer although showing as installed and designated as
main printer - does not respond to print jobs. Properties shows bi-direction not available (choice greyed out).

Solution
The Epson Stylus Color 600 driver software supports USB connection at both ends only, it doesn't support a parallel-port, not even with an adapter. The same goes for any other USB printer which doesn't have a parallel-port.

You need a computer which has USB ports, that covers just about every computer built in the last 15-20 years so yours must be really old. A parallel-port isn't even fitted to computers any more, it's redundant.

You may be able to install a USB expansion card if your PC has the required type of slot, then you can plug the printer directly in to that.

Technology has marched on, sometimes there's no alternative but to upgrade if you want everything to work.

I guess maybe I wasn't clear about what I have and what I am trying to do. My computer has many USB slots - what I wanted to do is use the adapter cable with one end (parallel port plug) into back of Epson stylus color 600 - only type connection - and usb plug at other end of adapter cable - into usb input or usb hub into my windows 7 home premium 64bit desk top computer. Guess it's a no go. I replaced the ink supplies on the old Color 600 - but it just does.nt respond to what the desk top is putting out. Got a driver - PL-2303 - a Vista Driver which is supposed to be compatible with Win7 64bit - and might communicate with the old printer. Is there a danger installing that driver? Don't want to end up losing the working all in one Epson
NX-110. Which - now will not accept thick paper such as business card stock. That is what prompted attempt at bringing back the
stylus 600. Sorry -being so long winded. thnx for taking time to look this over.
