Apple has been trying to dump Samsung for years -- likely A5 and before.

Samsung helped design the A5 processor and Apple tried to move A6 production to TSMC. Apple likely had to redesign parts of the chip to avoid Samsung IP (coupled with TSMC issues at 28nm).
