Most Ethernet cards support Wake-On-LAN. When you turn the computer off, the ethernet card stays powered on (obviously you have to turn it off via the front switch, not by pulling out the power plug). If another device on your network sends the computer's ethernet card what's called a magic packet, it triggers the WOL capability, and the ethernet card sends a signal to the motherboard to turn the computer on, just as if you'd pushed the power switch in front. It also works if the computer is in hibernate or sleep.
