...I'm sorry but you know that's not how this works, right? They can't just slap a couple extra chips on the PCB and rake in the extra profit.

That's exactly how it works. Currently each chip on the NVME stick can hold up to 1TB. A double sided full size stick can have four on each side to hold 8TB. A 2 TB stick will now have two chips on one side.

Yup, that's exactly what happens. The SSD market is just that friendly with each other. Good thing none of them want more of the market! With those margins it'd be easy to make a move.
