Hello all,

So I turned my computer on this morning and the screen was just black and the cpu fan was spinning fast. After about 20 secs I pulled the power and plugged it back in and turned it on. It said overclocking failure. There is no over clock on the system. However after 20+ cold and warm reboots the issue did not reappear. I think it might be some random power spike or glitch because I could not make it do it again. This happened once before about 2 and a half months ago but I could make it do it again to find the issue before. Besides this issue there is no over problems with the system, the games work, the windows loads in 9 secs and it always shuts down properly. The system is dusted once a month and software maintenance is done routinely.

My Specs
Asus Z87-A Motherboard
Intel i7-4770k CPU 3.5 GHz
16 GB 1866 MHz Gskill Ram
980ti GPU
1050 Watt HX1050 Corsair PSU
150 GB SSD (OS Drive)
Three 2 TB 7200 RPM SATA drives

A visual inspection of the inside shows no popped caps, or damage and like I said the system runs perfect. Since this has happen twice I and countless boots apart I just want to make sure I have nothing to worry about. I am hoping this is just a glitch or random power spike that is nothing to worry about. But please share your thoughts below I'd really appreciate it.

Solution
If you are running your memory at 1866mhz, as your specs list, then you actually are overclocking the 4770Ks memory controller, so getting a failed overclock error is not shocking, because you are overclocking, whether you used XMP profile or not.

Looking at all of G-Skills offerings in a 16gb kit 2 x 8gb, if you did get a 2 x 8g kit of course?

Regarding the Sniper, Ares, and Ripjaws X series, timings, if you will manually set your memory setting in the BIOS you should not get the error anymore.

I suggest setting your memory speed to 1600mhz with timings of 9,9,9,24 at (2T or 2N whatever your BIOS tags those CR (Command Rate), settings some BIOS are T some are N) and manually set the DDR3 voltage to 1.50v.
