Turning a hard drive into a external drive

Hello, My laptop motherboard broke down so I bought a new laptop. However I was advised to put the sata hard drive into a external caddy. The usb driver loads but it doesn't appear on my computer though it doesn't on devices and printers. The properties states that it doesn't recognise the manufacteur,model and description.My old computer was run on Windows Vista and the new one on Windows 7
does that make a difference? Can anyone give me any advice to how to get the hard drive to work as a storage device?

Are you very sure, it was your laptops motherboard, not the disk, that broke down? You can try a different usb port or connecting it to a desktop, but it sounds like the disk is broken as well.
