I know this comes up every once in a great while, but there's never a conclusive answer and it's been a long time. Does this effect the monitors life time? Or just simply, is it bad to turn it off and on instead?
Depends on how often you turn it off/on.
Mine gets turned off before I goto bed, and then I turn it back on again when I get home from work.
Now if your tun yours on/off multiple times a day, especially for a short time ex: turn off, get coffee, turn back on, then there is a chance you could hurt your monitor.
my rule: if im going to be away for more than an hour, I turn the monitor off.
I usually let mine fall asleep, the reason I thought of this again was because lately my monitors (well not just one) would go to sleep, then turn back on with a black screen. I turned off all the power savings and that seemed to help a bit just not entirely. So I though instead of making a big deal of it, I would just, turn my monitor off instead 😀
I'm with kittle. I never use sleep mode I just turn the monitor off. I have never had a monitor fail doing it that way. Sleep mode on the other hand has caused more problems than it is worth.
Everyone here hates sleep mode, you know I'm talking about "when to turn off the display", or whatever it's called, I'm on my Linux machine right now, my big computers off.
There is nothing wrong with sleep mode, it just uses a few watts because its sleeping and the led is on. For me I turn it off but its a habit and the orange light is a little annoying at night.

People don't like it because it stresses the hard drive. I'm pretty sure it's still sending voltage into the CPU, and ram in sleep mode too. But like I said, I don't really use it so I never looked to far into it.
