Hello,

I have got myself a new wireless router (non ADSL) that has a Wan port on the back.

I also have a cheap Belkin router that I would like to turn into a modem and use with my new router.

Am I correct in thinking that all I need to do is the following,

Belkin (Lan Port) -> (Wan) New Router?

Also, in order to turn the Belkin into a modem, am I right in thinking that I

1. Turn off the DHCP on the old Belkin

2. Change default IP of Belkin to same range of new routers DHCP (Outside of DCHP range)

3. Same subnet etc

Am I missing anything, as the above doesn't seem to work?

Is the Belkin a combo DSL modem/router? If not, it cannot do that. If so, you may be able to do it depending on the Belkin model using a DMZ mode.

The other option is to use the new wireless router as an AP.

It's a very old Belkin Wireless G Router that I don't really care about.

The new router that I have is the Cisco RV180W.

What would you recommend using as a modem for the above?

Thanks very much for your help/time

Just so I'm more educated for the future - why isn't the Belkin able to act as a modem?

Unless a unit is built as a modem or combo modem/router, it does not have the circuitry to act as a modem -- to modulate and demodulate the analog telephone signal into the digital information form that comprises your network data.
