Turning old laptop to media station

Hi,

I am converting my old laptop into a media station and I am facing an issue, when ever I start the PC it will boot to the laptop display, if I remove the display and attach a HDMI/VGA monitor I get no display.
I have to install an OS and set the display method to the HDMI/VGA but I cannot install the OS without the original laptop display. I have review the BIOS but I cannot see where or what setting to change any ideas?

you are correct, you need to set up an os. big deal, you need one to be a media server in any case, right? i have my notebook set to boot to both and when folded closed, it still runs windows but blanks the laptop screen

My concern is that if in the future the PC fails, I will need to attach the display again and that might be a problem, also if there are any boot issues I wont be able to see them. I want to have the MOBO working with out the original display.

then don't use a laptop. get a NUC or build something like that.
