Turtle Beach Earforce X12 in-game chat not working?

So I can't seem to get the in game voice chat working through my headset. I went into the
control panel - sound - recording
and turned up my mic volume. I also went into
control panel - speech recognition - set up microphone
I selected the headset, tested my voice volume, everything seems to be working properly, but then when I get in game, no one can hear me and the "speaker" next to my name never even lights up to signify that I'm speaking....

The turtle beach chat feature is not for PC. You turning the thing won't change the volume. So I think that's not your problem.

Hmmm, well when I bought it it said it would work for 360 or PC so I assumed that include the chat functionality....

I should clarify, I don't have the headset plugged into my 360 controller. It's plugged directly into the PC, green plug in the speaker port, pink plug in the mic port, USB plugged in.
I don't really understand why it shouldn't work.
