TV to outdoor speakers hookup

I have a TV under my patio and it's hooked up to Direct TV. However the sound on those flat screen speakers aren't the greatest. I've installed 2 speakers in the sofit and tried plugging the speakers directly to the TV. However nothing happens. Is there an other piece of equipment that needs to be between the TV and speakers?

Usually an amplifier is needed unless the speakers have power and their own amps.

No the speakers do not. Any type amp will do?

Well the speakers will have an impedence range, so you need an amp that will output in that range.

I'll check the speakers for that information and purchase an amp that will work on those speakers? I suppose the amp will be connected between the TV and outdoor speakers. The connection would be from the TV to the amp and out from the amp to the speakers?

Yes TV to AMP and then AMP to speakers. Does the TV have outputs?

Yes. I had connected the speakers to the audio of the TV.
