Two computers one harddrive

May 3, 2012
I'm thinking of getting a new computer. Would it be possible for me to put my old hard drive in the new computer. I know I would need to install new drivers if it works. But would I need to reinstall windows and would all my data still be there?

It depends if your hard drive has an operating system or not.

If your old hard drive has the original operating system such as Windows XP, the hard drive will not boot. Because windows is hardware-specific. You will have to re-install windows if you plan to use the hard drive in a new computer.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
your better off in the long run and your data is safer to leave the drive in the old pc and connect both of them to your home network and turn on file sharing and copy the files you want from the old hard drive to the new one. if the old pc is going to the land fill after the data is moved you can put the drive in a usb case.
