Two Networks, One router

I have two managed-switch networks, call them office and private. the office switch connects to the router to provide internet, ip scheme (example) 10.0.0.x. The private network on another managed switch is ip scheme 10.0.1.x. trying to bridge the private network into the office network to give those pc's internet, but can't seem to make it work. The router is a cisco rv-082 and can do vlan and vpn, but the private switch won't let me change the gateway to go to the ip of the cisco router. Any help would be appreciated since I'm not getting anywhere in a hurry with this mess.
Addendum: neither managed switch has a wan port, so I have connected a patch cable between each of them and the router. The router is doing dhcp and matches the office switch scheme. Connecting the private switch to lan port 2 on the router seems the way to go but can't change the gateway address on that private switch.

This isn't the ideal way of doing things, but if you can't set the gateway address on the private switch, can you leave it as DHCP and set the router as your DHCP server? If the router allows the creation of a VLAN, it should allow you to assign different IP address ranges to the office and private networks.
Switches don't have WAN ports, and they don't have "gateway" addresses. You have to configure your router to support "private" network IP space as well (assigning correct DHCP addresses, proper routing etc), while keeping both address spaces separate (without routers between them).

I don't know whether RV-082 can do that, though.

In essence, you need to create a VLAN on the router, assign it to one of the router's LAN ports and physically connect a switch to that. This will allow both networks out of the same router (thereby granting Internet access) and keep them separate from each other, which I assume is what you want.

To sum up, the router will have one LAN and one VLAN. The office switch (and any devices attached to it) will have IP addressing of 10.0.0.x and will be on the LAN. The private switch (and any devices attached to it) will have IP addressing of 10.0.1.x and will be on the VLAN.

alabalcho: this is a managed switch, a Procurve and it does indeed have an entry for a gateway address, but no wan port.
bicycle_repair_man: this is along the lines of what I tried but haven't had any luck yet, in essence though this is what should work. thanks!
