Hi guys

I know it's probably nothing, but for my peace of mind I must know

Just put two second hand HDDs in my PC, after some booting to someone else's Windows 7 I've formatted and repartitioned the drives. They now appear the same to me in disk management, although in file explorer one shows with slightly less space free than the other, even though they've both been formated.

Is there a reason for this? Should I be worried? Wanted to be doubly sure before I start backing up onto it.

In Explorer, turn on 'show hidden files' and 'show system files'.
My guess is that one has some system stuff. $RECYCLE.BIN or something like that.

Or, as @USAFRet says, remove and recreate all partitions.

Even with show hidden files on, there's nothing there.

Still even if it was system stuff, could there be nearly 50GBs worth of files on there?

I've removed all the partitions on the other drive fine, but it won't let me delete the one on this drive. Only difference between the two is that this one says 'Page file'. Both partitions show as same size in disk management...

Your pagefile is on this extra drive...?
That would explain it.

You'll need to move your pagefile to a different drive before you can erase the drive. 50GB page file is absurd too.

Start - Run - sysdm.cpl [hit enter]
Advanced Tab - hit Settings onder Performance section
Go to Advanced Tab and hit change.

How much RAM do you have installed? How much free space do you have on your C: drive?

In your OS, undo any pagefile on these two drives.

In diskpart, completely delete all partitions and reformat these drives.

Diskpart function and the clean command.
Wipe these things clean.
Reformat as desired.

This needs to happen with ANY used drive...anything that you do not break the manufacturers sealed paskage on.
Drive, PC, whatever.
Full wipe and reformat.
