Synopsis: an old laptop (compaq with Win Vista!) will not connect to the new Cablevision DLink router.

Since it connected with the older Linksys E2500 router, is it possible to connect an internet out port on the new router to the internet in port on the old router, and use that router as, for instance, a guest network, so this computer can get connected? Yes, I know it should be replaced, but it may take some time for that to happen. Thanks for any help you all can give.

You can set it up 2 ways.

You can go Modem > WAN router LAN > WAN router2
However, you wont be able to communicate easy between the routers because they will typically pick different subnets. So a network device on router 2 wont see a network device on router 1 and vice versa. But all will have internet access.
OR you can go Modem > Wan router LAN > LAN router2
And turn off the DHCP service on Router 2 and don't use router 2's WAN port(or disable it in settings to it uses it as a LAN port if available)
And then no issues with routing, but remember to set router2's LAN IP to something on router1's subnet, and not the same as router 1's LAN IP or you will have trouble getting to their setting pages and some gateway issues will occur. Subnet is the first 3 numbers of the IP address.
