Someone told me that two-way SLI GTX 680 overkill for 1920x1080 gaming, is that true?

Games like Crysis 1 2 and 3, Battlefield 3, Metro 2033, and Far Cry 3 require at least two flagship GPU's to have smooth framerates on max settings at 1080p.

when a GTX 670 can give you smooth frame rates @ max settings . . how is it 2 680s, which could possible have a problem with micro stutter, be needed?

so yes 2 680 SLI is overkill. and it funny you ask a question but follow it up with a contradictory [strike]statement[/strike] claim.

Overkill - yes
Fun - yes

The only game really that needs that type of muscle will be Crysis3, the only real use for flagship GPUs and even the 2nd teir multi GPU setups are for multimonitor or 3D gaming or in some cases 2500*1400 resolutions.

So basically, your friend is right, to much musle for 2megapixel.

What about Metro 2033 and Metro The Last Light?

Battlefield 3 and all of the Crysis games also benefit from having two flagship GPU's in SLI/CFX.

Over kill ? No there are already games that one 680 can not max @ 1080p.Honestly though why buy a 680 a 670 is better bang for buck! Arma 2 can one 680 max it out? Hell no.
Crysis 2 with the DX11 + High res texture pack can one 680 max it out? Hell no.
Metro 2033 can one 680 max it out? Hell no.
Witcher 2 + ubersampling can one 680 max it out? Hell no.
GTA 4 can one 680 max it out? Hell no.
Far cry 3 can one 680 max it out? Hell no.
Lost Planet 2 can one 680 max it out? Hell no.
