My computing needs are modest and the old Phenom II x4 970 system I'm using is still good enough for what I do. Nevertheless, I thought I'd treat myself to a new desktop and bought the parts for it last year. I assembled the hardware and ran some quick tests but never got around to installing the software. Here's the setup (all new except the graphics card):

Ryzen 5 5600G
Asus Prime B550M-K (one PCIe 4x4 and one 3x4)
2x8GB DDR4 3600
GTX 950 or 970 (have both, haven't decided which one to use)
ADATA XPG Gammix S70 1TB
WD SN770 Black 1TB

Windows 10-11

(Never mind why I got a G CPU for use with a discrete GPU, why two 1TB SSDs instead of a single 2TB unit, why not a cheaper model for the second SSD, etc.. It's a long story).

My question is: Which SSD should I use for the OS (+data) in the 4x4 slot and which for data alone in the 3x4 slot? I have a total of 700GB of data which is expected to change very slowly.

Either way, I don't think I'll ever notice any difference in actual use but it'll be nice to know that they're configured in the most reliable and effective way possible.

Thanks for the replies. At the time I ordered the parts, I didn't know that the IGP versions of Ryzen were limited to PCIe 3. I learned that fact in time to return the SSDs but decided to keep them as the price difference wasn't all that much.

PCIe 4.0, at this time, does not offer a real world benefit that makes much difference over PCIe 3.0. There is a difference, but it's typically marginal at best.
