Is it possible to have two IT careers at the same time? I want to be a computer systems analyst but also a network architect so if it is possible what two careers in IT would work well together?

Solution

1. You cannot maintain 60-80hours/week. You WILL burn out. And not be 100% at either job.

2. Legally? Sure, if neither company has a policy against it. (USA legalities. Other countries may have different laws)

3. What happens when Job A, networking, requires a few extra hours...

In a lot of smaller companies, people often wear many hats.

In small company's this is totally doable. My friend has been an accountant, network architect, general tech support the cleaner and gardener for 2 years at the same time in a 17 people small bussiness.

MERGED QUESTION
Question from tclanigan : "Two tech careers at the same time"

Hello, I am wondering if it is possible to juggle two IT careers at the same time, and if so what combination would work best together?

Yes and that’s great but what I meant was is it possible to legally juggle certain IT careers at once for separate companies with each their own hourly pay or salaries and have it work? For instance as a network architect for one company could I be a computer system analyst for another company and make it work? And if so
How would you suggest the route I go to have two full time IT careers with at least separate pay totalling at least 60 - 80 hours a week?

3. What happens when Job A, networking, requires a few extra hours this week. These extra hours interferes with Job B.
"Sorry boss, I can't do that" won't go over well.

Ok very true and I appreciate the response but that is not what I meant, I mean having two full time IT careers totaling 60 - 80 hours a week combined between the two separate IT careers

Ok I see your point, how many
Hours would you think is doable? I have a full time job and a part time job at the moment, and I like working 7 days a week but with changes of pace as to what I’m doing is what I like to have with a career portfolio but I’m unsure as to what avenues I want to go with networking and systems and have a full time and a part time job both in IT any suggestions?

2x fulltime professional jobs will kill you.
Literally.

Are you working to live, or living to work?

What do you do now? Are you not getting paid enough?

Oh I work as a customer service representative for an energy efficiency company and then a retail clerk part time but I’m studying for the A+ cert and will take on a associates in applied science of information systems with a concentration in networking then onto a bachelors in applied science in information systems then hopefully a masters in business administration with a concentration in information systems so those careers would be in my path of education as far as I understand so I’d love to do both but I definitely want a part time job for my days off at least to be honest

So any potential 2x jobs is years into the future.
Get your certs, get your degree, then revisit the situation.

Ok well I think other people reading this would want an answer to this question regardless of whether I should concern myself with this until years in the future when I could utilize the answer first hand. But regardless of that it would help to know what is feasible and that would help me make the right decisions going forward with not only what I want to do but other people reading this considering the same situation would like an answer and honestly there could be people reading this either now or later who are in the right position to make that decision I’m thinking about making in the future for themselves and I was just the random guy to think to ask about it with some forethought and find out the answer when I couldn’t google it and find the right answer

Feasible? Not really.

2x full time professional jobs WILL negatively interact with each other, and WILL kill you.
Boss A: "OK, now that you've specced out the new server farm for our satellite office, I need you to go out there next week and install it. Wednesday-Friday. Saturday if needed."
Boss B: :heink:

A full time and a part time? Sure. People do that all the time. You just have to find the right ones.

Ok good point, what IT jobs would be possible to do part time? I’ll take your advice and do one full time job but what should I consider for the part time job?

All depends on what YOU can and want to do.
Freelance development, maybe?
