Hi again I recently asked you all if I should use a optiplex or a laptop for my htpc

I have decided to go with the dell optiplex 745 sff as far as a can tell my GPU doesent send audio through the HDMI port but my graphics card has a little 2pin spdif in port is there somewhere on the optiplex motherboard small form factor that this cable could go if so would it then send audio via HDMI

If there is nowhere for the spdif to go could I use a small pci card with spdif out on the card and connect that directly to the spdif in on the GPU and would it then send audio via HDMI

Second question

I recently asked about using 4tb drives in my acer aspire if I removed all the parts from this tower would I be able to buyand put it all into a fractal design core 3000 case I realy love this case and will plan on using it in a new build later next year but could I put my motherboard and PSU into it for the time being until I can afford the build

I aren't sure what form factor my motherboard is and my power supply is the stock one from the acer for its motherboard

I will answer the first question i think someone else would know better then me on the second one.
So no audio via HDMI? If you have multiple HDMI ports and/or audio ports you need to pick the connection in the control panel. To do this go to Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Under sound go to manage audio devices. and select HDMI and try again. If this does not work please reply back and we can try some more things.

Also to help people that will answer question #2 please give us the acer aspire model because certain ones will have different motherboard configurations and some will work with that Fractal case. as some would be Micro ATX motherboard some Mini ITX some atx ECT.

a) possibly, but i can't find mobo specs or pics on the web. if there is a SPDIF output on the mobo, it's usually just a 3pin header on a 4pin block so one pin is missing (as far as i remember). they're usually labelled and usually in the lower left corner of the board (corner closest to audio jacks and graphics cards)

b) you looking to use the case with new drives, or just moving stuff over? if new drives, it might be worth it - even if the mobo is only held in by the 3-4 screws that match up with the acer's holes (remove all other standoffs!!!). if it's just to have a new case, i'd probably pass on that. buy it when you buy the rest of the replacement system. but yeah they are nice looking cases. i have the core 1500 and got it on sale. i never pay full retail for anything other than milk and apples. and gasoline. damned gasoline.

I only have the one HDMI port it's a very cheap card as you can not fit much into the optiplex 745 and other audio ports would be intergrated nothing off the GPU apart from little white spdif in built on the card itself I have had a look in control panel but can't see much but the only option I can see is speakers and that's a intergrated port on the back of the tower

And it's a acer aspire m3201
Motherboard acer rs780hvf

At the moment I would like to buy the case and move everything over then replace some drives until I can afford to a full new build with different mob PSU cpu ect my drives point the wrong way in my case and I need the drives to be quickly removed and the fractal has 6 bays and quick removal would make my life easyier now and be a great case for my new server new build then I would do all the drives again but 4tb reds

And I can't find any spdif out on the board but there is hardly any room to look it would mean stripping the comouter

It's not modern lol it's a nvidea GeForce 840 not the gs version there are no choices for the case I use its a small for factor and supports only tiny pice self powered cards with a white two pin built on the board saying spdif in and it was installed using nvidea auto detection software for the drives works at 1080p just about but no sound

The only modern not realy modern that would fit is the Radeon 5450

can you read the p/n on the mobo? the SPDIF header is likely near an edge or corner, so obviously the most inconvenient spot possible

if the case is on sale, maybe snag it then. or plan to use hot-swap cages in a more plain case - i've got a 4-drive hot swap in my cooler master elite 370 case, which is my office server. it's good to have a case with triple 5.25" bays to shove in a quad 3.5" cage!

Ok in theory that case will fit the motherboard. Its really not practical to switch cases just for hard drive spaces. and after a quick google that Acer desktop should support 4 Hard drives and then 1 more below the DVD with a cheap 5.25' to 3.5' adaptor. so its 5 drives with the case that came with the computer
However acer is known to have non standard front panel power connectors so you may not be able to power it up without touching a screw driver on the + and - switches on the motherboard... every time you want to turn it on

I uses the acer as a server it has already got 4 3 1/2 drive bays and 2 DVD bays with 6 sata total the when you want to remove the drives you have to remove the processor and ram as the cages point towards the back of the case and this is a big hassle and my original post was about my motherboard supporting 4tb drives not 4 drives although I do want 4x4 drives I would use the case now for convince and then build a new server inside ASAP

And as for powering on like that I have done it before 🙁 but it's set via bios to boot at the same time every day so would I still need to power it on like tha and I could just rig the old power switch for now if I had to

The optiplex is the hardest tower in the world to fit a GPU it is a small form factor so no room there are capacitors that block low hanging cards cpu heatsink for long cards and no power supply upgrade the card has to be measured perfectly in all places

Seriously you would struggle get a Mars bar inside a quick google tells you that

So a doubt it would fit the only things that do are the cheap £25 Radeon cards and not the ones with big heat sinks

No there's another post on here about the optioned 745 and r7 250 see what a mean it's pretty much impossible I thought that would fit once a saw it

So how can a get my sound to pass through the HDMI port do I need to find a way to use that spdif in on my current GPU like a pci sound card with spdif out on board and then wire the cards together ?

If you could get one to fit that is I realy can't find a spdif on my mb but dell never released my comouter with upgrades in mind it was more of a OEM business machine
