Two wi-fi connections (and Slow upload speed?)

we recently changed our internet provider from Wave to Centurylink and got a new modem from Centurylink. however, two wi-fi connections now show up, one is from our router, a Linkseys EA4500, that was our old connection (it still works) and the other says its Centurylink (don't know if this one works).

our internet speed has been rather slow since we got this new system and i was wondering if it had to do with the two connections or that when changing providers the internet is generally slower for the first few days. i ran a speed test and got a slower download (from 7-8 to a solid 6 Mbs) and what i feel is a really slow upload speed (.6 Mbs, don't know what it was before). i was just wondering if this was normal or we set this up wrong.

Are you sure that the Century Link device is not a combo modem and router? It is likely that is the case since you have two wireless networks.

You will have issues that will vary depending on how the Century Link device is connected to the EA4500.

I would suggest that you attach the EA4500 LAN port to LAN port to the Century Link gateway and setup the EA4500 as a wireless AP, thus let the Century Link do the routing.

And you will want to insure that you either turn off the Century Link wireless radio or if you want to have a second radio, just insure that the two units are using different radio channels.

so how do i do that? i think the centurylink might be dual, at least that is what it shows in the diagram for setting up (as in it does not show a requirement for a router) but i don't know how to do what you are suggesting i do.

Start by looking at the instruction manual for the Century Link and the EA4500, it really is quite simple. You need to start by confirming that the Century Link is indeed a gateway, or at least post its model.

To configure each you would want to disconnect the EA4500 from the network, attach to it with a computer by an Ethernet cable and use your browser to access the configuration pages of the router as described in the manual.

the century link modem is a PK50001 Modem router, solves one mystery, but i looked through the linkseys manual and i honestly have no idea on what to do, even what you described confuses me because i am already hooked up to that router and i can't find anything resembling configuration pages. it says to use cisco connect, but i don't have that on this PC and we didn't receive a disk for the router.

i am thinking i should just disconnect the Linksys at this point, is that okay or is the Linksys doing anything that is important?
