TXAA and FXAA

Aright I pretty much know what every sort of AA solution is and what they do but I just can't seem to wrap my head around FXAA and TXAA.

I know FXAA is very efficient and does something called pixel smoothing but what is that?

And I know TXAA is a mix of MSAA and something else which stops shimmering and crawling but what is that something else and how does it work?

FXAA takes no hit on performance, whilst TXAA gives you a bigger hit on performance than MSAA.

Personally I must say I dislike TXAA. It adds motion blur, a filter and MSAA combined. Big performance hit.
