Just realized it has been 5 years since I made my Rig. Things are still decent, but gaming isn't giving me the FPS anymore that I look for.

+Intel i7 970
+EVGA SuperClocked 01G-P3-1367-TR GeForce GTX 460 SE (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0
+G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
+ASUS Rampage III Formula LGA 1366 Intel X58

I dont want to spend a fortune: was thinking upgrading to the MSI 970 would be sufficient. Thoughts?

Solution

power supply make and model?

your main weakness is that video card

your system is triple channel, adding another stick of ram will also give you a bump in performance

you are also going to need to overclock the cpu if you want that 970, so get a good cpu cooler as...

When looking around, I came across the MSI Computer Graphics Cards GTX 960 GAMING 4G for $100 less. Although my budget can afford the $330 price tag of the 970, is it worth it over the 960?

Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182200

I already have a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103057 and overclocked it when I got it...in 2011... I didnt go super aggressive with the overclocking, but ya know...a fair bit, would that be enough to get the full usage of the 970? Should I look for an older model graphics card like the 960 instead?

When I built I, I put in http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231440 and then got a deal for http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231445 The RAM have different timings...would you think it would be worth to get 3 sets all having the same timing?

your power supply is not capable of delivering it's rated wattage and is poor quality

I suggest you upgrade before getting the gtx 970

tier 1 or 2 power supply model from this list, in 500w or better:

do you have four sticks of ram?
