To start off, I've looked everywhere for solutions to this problem. I have Ubuntu 20.04 dualbooted on an m.2 with Windows 10. This problem started after a clean install of both OS on the brand new M.2. The system build is using the following brand new parts:
  • Samsung Evo 970 M.2, Ryzen 5 3600x
  • ROG Crosshair VII Hero
  • 2x8 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro
The only non-new part is a GTX 970.

Right before the system crashes, the mouse input and whatever audio (if any) is being played starts stuttering. The mouse barely moves, and the audio plays in very short discrete chunks. This happens for about 30 seconds before the system automatically reboots. This does not happen on Windows. The problem occurs with Nouveau and NVIDIA 440 drivers.

If anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it a lot. If any log output would provide more useful information, I'm happy to post it.

Hi,

my Ubuntu 20.04 freezes instantly every few hours. No warning, screen image stays, but USB, Bluetooth and network functions are off, no chance to log in from another device. Never happened in 18.04, 19.10

I tried switching to Nouveau - no joy.

Intel i7 8700
GeForce GTX 1060 6GB/PCIe/SSE2
Gnome 3.36.1

Syslog shows (among trivial errors) this:

Any ideas?

Thanks

Will do next ime it crashes. However, I may have found what's causing the freezes. In another part of syslog I encountered Seg-Faults regarding Gnome-Extensions. I have now turned two of them off (arc-menu, since its not Ubuntu generic) - the problem sems to emenate from "appindicators".

It hasn't crashed since, so I'll update this thread in a day or two.

@Zion: You might try switching off the appindicater-extension by using "tweaks".

I have exactly the same problem as @Zion. I will try @slap882's solution and get back to you to see if it works for me.

UPDATE: this did not work for me, so I've downgraded to Ubuntu 18.04 until this is fixed

After a week or two the dubious crashes reappeared, so I downgraded too. On a rainy weekend I decided to back everything up properly and give MINT a try. I did and it worked - I am on the latest MINT distribution now. No crahses, everything works just fine. I do not miss Snaps or Flatpacks, which are not supported by MINT. For the time being I'll stick to MINT.
