I am trying to dual boot Linux from Windows 8.1 and I have already partitioned some space for it and everything but when I try to install Ubuntu from the USB on my boot menu it keeps saying "Invalid or Corrupt Kernel"

Any idea what the cause of this might be? Could it be a bad burn?

Solution
It is possible it was not 'burned' correctly or a bad download, it does happen!

Check the md5sum from when you downloaded it.

many times when i am in windows i use http://linuxliveusb.com/ to make usb because it downloads correct image for you and check md5sum automatically.

btw are you using Ubuntu 14.04?

Alright, and by the way yes I was trying 14.04.2 LTS but it was saying it wasn't on the compatibility list, and when it tried 14.10 it was saying something about it being altered. Could it be the USB?

I have checked google and wiki but with mixed results, this and the ubuntu forums are honestly the best places to go 😛

I was thinking since you have a very new motherboard, it would be better to be running 14.10 instead of 14.04.

The "altered" status indicates a bad md5sum. You way want to try downloading using a torrent instead of http. Torrents check md5sums on every 'block' and will redownload the 'block" if md5 does not match.

Could also be USB is bad too. Please verify that your md5sum, using the md5sum program listed in ubuntu link (or other md5sum program), before concluding your usb is bad.

You can find the md5sums for the .iso and a torrent for 14.10 here (scroll to bottom of page):
http://www.releases.ubuntu.com/14.10/

I've tried torrents before I originally posted and I had trouble as well.

Are the "blocks" each line of code on the md5sum page? Is there a way I can manually fix that? I don't know anything about code but I could give it a shot..

Also, if it is the USB that is bad, would it be easier/possible for me to just purchase a live CD/DVD from the ubuntu website and boot it that way? Or is it a completely different process doing it via CD/DVD than through USB?

Would what I have already partitioned and everything not work if I tried to boot from a CD or would it be okay/ the same process?

Just wondering
