Ugly Cameras

Hi Folks,

Sorry to just complain, but I've been looking for a new digital camera for
my family (anywhere under $700) and I can't believe the complete lack of
aesthetic consideration in today's cameras. It seems like every
manufacturer is making these cheap plastic cameras that look like they were
assembled with spare parts from radio shack. I see none of the
ergodynamics, smooth curves or rubberized edges that were made just a few
years ago. Everything looks like a plain silver, square plastic box - as
though it was cobbled together in someone's garage.

Am I the only one who yearns for a camera that looks good - besides having
the right features and picture quality?

OK - I'm finished now. Sorry ;-)

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.

It's a trend with some manufacturers more than others. Fuji etc
P&S's all look like cheap plastic toys, while others (e.g. Canon)
at least look like metal. We get compliments all the time on our
S1 IS and Sony F-717.

Yes - those 2 cameras do look very nice. Thanks for pointing those out 🙂

You're right. It just seems that there is a general trend in consumer
electronics toward a thin, plasticized fake metal look. Even car dashboards
are going that way. I guess I'll just have to wait until the style goes
back to a more organic look.

I mostly agree, but go play with the Sony F717 (already mentioned),
Sony F828 (now that is a tank!), and the almost as solid Olympus C8080.

These just happen to be the only prosumers I've owned, or cared to own..
