I have a feeling the US prices will come down prior to launch. Otherwise I'm planning on getting the 187$ Vista-64 bit Ultimate at newegg with the free win 7 ultimate upgrade coupon. At least I can save 30$ over just buying Win7 ultimate.

Well, Home Premium will obv run most multiprocessor but *single* socket x86 systems. But what about dual socket systems? I recall back in the days of XP you had to get Professional...

If republicans are to believe, the UK system of health care is so overstressed and ineffective, these poor souls won't live long enough to see the next Windows release. Microsoft is just doing them a favor, not charging them for extra years on a license they'll never see.

That said, the UK usually has to wait forever to get releases of U.S. software, movies, etc... Maybe Microsoft is just trying to play nice this time, and not drive more Europeans to linux.

Its simple economics. A monopoly gets to chose their own price, and they pick the price that maximizes profits the most. Someone was analyzing sales data at Microsoft, and staring at a graph decided that this was the price they need to sell at to maximize profit in EU.

As if a business would do ANYTHING to "play nice." What are we, in kindergarten? There's no Santa either, btw.

Just like china getting office for some ridiculously low price. MS can eat a fat one. It'd be cheaper for me to buy MS office in china and have it imported, then install and go fetch the necessary language pack, if it's not already installed that is. Not too terribly hard to save about 100 bucks. anyway. this is a load of crap on micro$hafts part, and just goes to prove that they're making US pay so that other countries can have their crap cheaper. 300 bucks for an OS? come the f**k off, really. Especially considering it's basically just a modified kernel update of windows $hista. Where's their sorry excuse for "Multitouch" support that DIY people have been pumping out for YEARS. NON EXISTENT. Yet they made such a HUGE fuss over it when asked about windows 7 prior to it's release. Oh and BTW, gaming on windows 7 = crap. Granted the framerates are a little more steady, but i'm getting roughly HALF the framerate in TF2 vs. windows XP x64. Not to mention dx10 and dx10.1 support is a joke at best. All of my productivity can be done in linux, and much easier in linux as well. So what's the point? OH YEAH!!! I REMEMBER to bend you over and try and force people into shelling out more cash. that's right. The only GOOD copy of windows 7 is a copy that includes ALL features and costs 100 bucks or less, and lets face it, that doesn't exist, and won't exist.

Anyone living in the US that is smart and wishes to have the new Windows 7 version is going to buy Windows Vista professional with the free Windows 7 upgrade for about $120 (or less) shipped from most retailers. It doesn't make sense to shell out $200 for this.

On a side note, I find it ridiculous that any computer I build these days, the most expensive part is almost always (exception being an all-out gamer or business rig) Windows itself - why?

So true. I work for [an unnamed super-huge global tech company] (HP) and we just bend over for the shareholders. We only care about consumers if the shareholder says we gotta or we feel nice and the shareholder doesn't complain.

NO one in the U.S. is allowed to complain when something is cheaper somewhere else in the world. in almost every case, stuff is significantly cheaper in the U.S! and remember everything is made in China anyway.
