Funny as we get around this problem in the U.S. by spending ourselves into what many now consider debt that can never get [fully] paid off, or at least would take several generations.

That's because the USD is a magical beast, unlike any other currency, and can print itself out of debt. If any other country tries that, they face financial ruin.
 
In my opinion, this is a mistake. For an economy the size of the UK, this amount of money is peanuts.

This also seems contradict statements about investing in the economy.
