OK, being downright cheap and new to the DSLR scene, are there any
websites in the UK that offer individuals the opportunity to buy
and sell lenses etc.

I'm thinking about websites run by enthusiasts for each other, like
the amateur run secondhand astronomy websites (www.astrobuysell.com)
rather than ebay or sites run by shops themselves.

The only problem with a lot of Uk companies selling used equipment is
that the product is sold 'as is' no examination of the product takes
place and any potential problems are either not mentioned of
deliberately withheld.
Japanese re-salers check, evaluate and often re-furbish used equipment
and often offer some sort of limited guarantee.
