ultima VI: companions don`t fight with me

hello,
i´m revisiting ultima VI and noticed a strange behaviour:
whenever a combat starts, the only one fighting is the avatar, my
companions just stand around and look. two are set to front mode in
battle and iolo with his crossbow is set to fight from behind,
BUT they do nothing, just standing there.
how do i get them into battle?

Are you in solo mode? There were several times in U6 I put single characters
into solo mode so they would get all of the experience points from the combat.
The other party members would not participate.

You did press 'C' to enter combat mode, didn't you?

no, i´m not. ialready tried to set the game to party mode before a
battle. in the battle the computer says something like "not during
confrontation".
but i have a feeling this is the right way to the solution of my
problem. any more suggestions?

Hmmmm.., if the Control-C suggestion in the other email isn't the solution
either, then I shall be forced to reinstall U6 to see if I can replicate and
solve the problem. Darn, and I was going to help my wife with the chores. <G>

times of miracles?
i don´t know what it was, but after a few restarts my companions
finally aid me in battle.
somehow disturbing that there are no messages like "dupre attacking
with sword" ...
thanks for your help, ahem, cough, my next stupid question is already
posted...

Urgh.. too much U7! What you must do is hit 'B' for Begin Combat
(also Break Off). ('C' is Cast Spell)

You need to exit combat mode before you can change
to party mode. Besides, being in party mode will let
shapino warn you of enemy presence in advance
