my motherboard is an old one...a DTK PRM-00761, the manual says it supports ultra DMA with transfers upto 33MB/s. My old harddisk just turned into another paperweight...!!!...and i need a new one....my limited knowledge saya that all the new HDs are either with 66 or 100 MB\s transfer rates.....can i get one of those..?? will my motherboard support them.??? if yes....any suggestons as to a model would be great....a 30-40 Gig one will do....
Forgive My Ignorance!!!!

Yes, your motherboard is ATA33 but all ATA66 and ATA100 drives are backward compatible. You just won't be able to take advantage of the very small difference. If you do want to, you can get a PCI IDE controller card. I recommend the IBM 75GXP series.

Yeah , The IBM Deskstar 75 GX the best hard-drive!
Get the 7200 rpm, because you can notice the difference in performance!
And you should buy the 45 Gb!
There´s no such thing as too much free space on your hard-drive! :-D

Better burn in Hell with some company than freeze in Heaven all alone

Theoretically, the 7200RPM drives give you a 33% increase over the 5400RPM drives. Anyway, 7200RPM drives are mainstream now, so there's no reason not to get them.
