Ultra or NOT Ultra

I've bought FX5200 Ultra based graphics card a couple weeks back (yeh, I know that I should have read the posts more carefully before I did that....). The strange thing is that WinXP Display Property says the GPU is FX5200 not FX5200 Ultra!! The Nvidia tab also shows FX5200 not FX5200 Ultra...

I called the card manufacturer and they said "regular detonator should only show FX5200 no matter it is FX5200 or 5200 Ultra. You need a special FX5200 Ultra driver to make WinXP to display the correct GPU type".

Should I believe what they are saying? I cannot get rid of the suspect feeling that they might just use FX5200 GPU and overclock it to the FX5200 Ultra spec (if it is possibe). Please shed some light on me.

Thanks,

I wouldn't believe what they are saying. You don't need any special drivers. Nvidia releases their drivers for ALL cards. This means that their drivers are good for the non-ultra/ultra cards. And yes, the drivers will tell you if you got a ultra/non-ultra. If you want to double check get a third party program like Sandra or 3dMark 2003. They will tell you what you got.

Oh, and if you do think about returning it, I'd seriously think about getting another card. For around the same price you would be much better served by a TI 4200. However, I would recommend you spend the extra few dollars and get a 9600 Pro. Work a few more hours or something, you will much better served, as I'm sure you've read the reviews.

The FX 5200 and FX 5200 ULTRA use the exact same GPU.

Just get an overclocking utility and see what the card is currently clocked at. Then you'll know if it's an ultra right away.
