I'm currently stuck on the decision of getting the Acer x34 or the new upcoming ultrawides that are gonna be 144hz. my question, is 100hz with Gsync better than 144hz without it, which would give me a better experience.

btw before you ask if i can reach 144hz, i plan on getting a second gtx 1080

thank you for your input

Hi!

I just upgraded my rig recently and decided to go with the ASUS PG348q, so pretty similar to the X34. I also had the same issue that you had.

I'll tell you that so far with my setup i7 6700k @4.5ghz and a EVGA 1080 FTW ultrawide gaming is amazing. Yes, you will have to dial back some settings if you want locked in at 100fps but it's absolutely great.

I would recommend going to a brick and mortar store to check out the difference. Sit in front of them and think about it.

Another point would be what game types your are playing. More support for shooters on 16:9 but 21:9 is great for RPG, racing and the like.

Hopefully this helps.

I've just invested in the Acer XR341CK...their freesync monitor which runs at up to 75hz. I have to 100% agree that ultrawide gaming is an amazing experience and would say from all my research in terms of reading the reviews of both the freesync and g-sync versions of the monitor, most if not all the reviewers stated you would be hard pushed to tell the difference above 100Hz and the freesync/g-sync element smooths out any fluctuations in frame rates anyway.

I would highly recommend (if you have a compatible GPU) going freesync or g-sync over just 144hz without. The 21:9 aspect ratio and thus the extra FOV in games such as BF4 is simply amazing.

A definite yes to your question. You will not be achieving more than 100 frames per second on any game (at least you shouldn't care at that point anyway). The synchronized refresh will always produce much smoother gaming video. G-sync is definitely the best experience, and of course size and resolution should be considered for your budget as well.
