Hello!

Is it worth buying an ultrawide monitor for me?
I have an RX580 with an Intel i5 7600k.
I will be gaming and just using it for schoolwork, I moght also use it for photoshop and stuff.
If you have experiences with ultrawides or normal 16:9 with high refresh rates or even both could you please tell me which one you prefer and why?

Thank you,
Kevin

I have found that a second side monitor has no impact in all 3hree of your scenarios.
The reason is that the images on it will not need to be regenerated very frequently.

You may find that some games do not like having anything else open and may not let a second monitor display properly. Probably related to full screen vs. windowed operation.

I really want the extra screen, so that I can have multiple windows opened without having them be too small, but the games I want to play (CS:GO, Overwatch, ARK Survival Evolved) don't support 21:9 properly and I don't really want to scale back to 1920x1080. Of course these are only the games which don't support 21:9 and some others do. But if this is the case, would you still go for an ultrawide?

I do not know how "improperly" the specific game support is.
I would imagine that anything can run in some manner.

Another option for you would be to go dual 1080P monitors for desktop use and game on one of them.
A second monitor adds no overhead even if connected to the graphics card.

There are some 3rd party utilities that allow games to get Ultrawide support. Now Overwatch... that's different. Blizzard is totally against Ultrawide Monitors.. they think it gives you an unfair advantage and refuse to support it properly. Even the patch they came out with for Overwatch to enable it doesn't give it true support.

I have also considered that, but dual monitors are kind of expensive.
Also what does 'overhead' mean? I'm sorry for not knowing haha...

I'm now almost sure I'm getting dual 16:9 monitors. One will be for gaming (Acer XF240H, 144hz, 1ms, TN, Freesync, 24" 1920x1080) and another for photo editing watching videos etc. (*don't know which one yet*, 60hz, 1-5ms, IPS, 24", 2560x1440).
Now my question is, will it affect my gaming performance if the second monitor is of a higher resolution like 2560x1440? I want to know if it will affect gaming performance in 3 scenarios:
1. When the second monitor isn't used, just on the desktop.
2. When the second monitor is used for looking up things (internet browsing, videos etc.).
3. When the second monitor is used for monitoring while streaming (twitch chat, recording software etc.).

Thanks

Ok, thank you for helping!
One more thing, can I 'edit' the screens myself? With this I mean, deciding on which monitor the icons go and stuff like that.

Yes, you can drag and drop icons from one to the other.
With different resolutions, you will find that the window size changes as it moves across monitors.
I find that aligning the top edge works best for me.
You adjust this by clicking on the desktop and selecting screen resolution.
