Umax 2000U

I bought a used Umax 2000U for use on a Windows XP Pro computer. The
scanner didn't come with the drivers, so I downloaded the following
files vs355su.exe and 2xxx_XP_upd.exe and found the instructions posted
by others on usenet on how to install the drivers and updater. The
posts kept mentioning updating the driver through Device Manager which
I did and also seeing 2 drivers, one being a Microsoft driver and the
other an unsigned Umax driver. I NEVER saw a second driver to select
from. I then went back to usenet and found a post mentioning
downloading the 4000U for Win2000 file which would have the 2000U
driver included. I did, and FINALLY I saw the second unsigned Umax
driver selection. I also installed the 2xxx_XP_upd.exe file and ran
the scanner test, which tested okay and I was able to scan a few pics.
My question is though I still have in the lower right-hand corner of
the screen a red circle with a line through it, which makes me think
something is not working like it should. I would appreciate any
insight since this is my first scanner and I'm really just learning how
to use it.

You would do better to buy a new scanner.. from what I have seen in the
past, drivers up to and including Windows 2000 are available..
unfortunately, not all Win 2000 drivers work well with XP..

When buying a second hand device, ALWAYS make sure that drivers are supplied
with it, or research driver availability before handing over the money..
this is particularly applicable to scanners..

Scanners are supplied with support software that will include drivers, a
photo editor and a scanner control program.. drivers alone will not get you
all of the functions that would have been available had you installed from
the original CD to a Win 9x operating system..

In Windows XP, Right Click My Computer, Properties, Hardware Tab, Device
Manager.

In the Device Manager, Delete (remove) the Yellow or Red marked Scanner
device.
Keep the good unmarked one.

XP may then ask to install the scanner again.
If so, unplug the scanner, Install the software, reboot, plug in scanner,
follows instructions.

I don't have a yellow or red marked scanner device within device
manager.

That's my next thought. I only paid 3.00 for the scanner so I can't
complain too much. But all the posts I've seen so far concerning this
particular model tell me it isn't a good choice for an XP machine.

Do you have a suggestion as to what would be a decent scanner to use on
an XP machine. I would only be scanning family photos, maybe text
documents.

My choice was a Canon Lide30.. it came with decent software, is USB and does
not require a mains connection.. is very slim too..

The major difference that makes one scanner better than another is the
software.. exterior design is down to space and whatever is aesthetically
pleasing.. internals are much of a muchness.. specs are similar across
ranges.. some claim to be really fast.. others can have sheet feeders fitted
after purchase.. negative/transparency scanning may be an option too.. the
purchase price will reflect all of the above..

BUT, when it comes to using them, it is the interface software and quality
of photo editor, OCR etc that ultimately determines how much value you will
get out of your scanner.. in this way, I think that Canon win hands down..
