[SOLVED] Unable to boot laptop with RAM in Slot 2

Hi, I seem to be unable to upgrade my RAM storage by installing another RAM stick in Slot 2.

By default the laptop comes with one 8gb RAM stick and whenever I add a second one the PC won't turn on besides the fan.
I've tried switching slots between them both, and also using the default stick in the second slot only, but to no avail.

However, I've booted up to the OS with the default RAM in the first slot and then added the second ram with the Windows booted up and it does in fact recognize the second RAM stick.

I've found no recent updates for the BIOS.

First of all, do not replace parts while a pc is powered up.
You are just asking for trouble.

Likely the ram sticks are sufficiently different that they do not work properly together.
Ram is sold in kits for a reason.
A motherboard must manage all the ram using the same specs of voltage, cas and speed.
The internal workings are designed for the capacity of the kit.
Ram from the same vendor and part number can be made up of differing manufacturing components over time.
Some motherboards, can be very sensitive to this.


The best I can suggest is to return the new ram.
Go to a ram site like crucial or kingston and access their ram upgrade app.
Enter the make/model of your laptop and you will get a list of supported upgrades.

I'm afraid Kingston's site doesn't have anything on it though.

So in theory the exact same RAM would work in slot 2.

Is it not an anomaly for me not able to boot it up with the default RAM on Slot 2 only?

In theory,, yes, the exact same ram should work in slot 2.
In practice, any ram that is not bought in the same kit will not be the exact same ram.
ram is matched at the factory for minor variations in timings and other specs to guarantee proper operation.

In your case, one stick has samsung parts and the other has micron parts.

What is the make/model of your pc?
Try crucial to see if they have a compatible single upgrade stick.
You will get support if it does not work out.

You might be better off to simply buy a 2 x 8gb ddr3 1600 speed kit that is matched.
Probably $60 or so used on ebay.

MSI CX61 2QC

I don't see how Crucial would help since the factory RAM is Kingston. Default RAM Slot 1

But I'll look into buying a new kit, thanks.
