Unable to Boot Linux at all

I am running an MSI Z97 gaming motherboard, Intel i7 4790k. I have a corsair SSD with Ubuntu 14.04 installed. It suddenly stopped booting up. I figured it was an issue with the SSD so I created a boot USB with 16.04 on it. It boots up to the grub screen and after I select try or install it just goes to a black screen and the monitor goes to sleep after a minute or so. The hard drive does the exact same thing. I disconnected all drives and it still does it. I have tried to boot under BIOS and UEFI, with the exact same results. Each comes up to the grub screen and will not proceed from that. I tried Mint with the same results. The PC will boot Windows 10 fine. I am out of ideas.

Most of the times that I had problems booting like that, it was graphics card relate. Not with your hardware but maybe the configuration that it's trying to use when it first boots.

Yes problem is probably graphics nvidia drivers. Boot with nomodeset then install proprietary nvidia drivers from the additional software/drivers tool.

How do I get nomodeset, if I can't boot into linux?

You add it to the kernel boot options at the grub boot screen.
