ASRock Z690 Pro RS w Intel i7-14700. The BIOS was version 12.07 dated 2022/11/21. I successfully flashed the BIOS twice to more recent versions. However, each time, the system was unbootable (could not boot to windows, nor a USB recovery drive). SO, I re-flashed the BIOS back to 12.07. System booted to windows 10 normally.

QUESTION: How do I update BIOS & avoid black screen?

QUESTION: How do I update BIOS & avoid black screen?
Is it completely black screen?
Boot using iGPU (disconnect discrete graphics card).
Turn off secure boot.

If it is black screen with blinking underscore, then this is problem with boot settings
(system trying to boot in legacy mode, when windows is installed in UEFI mode).
Fix boot settings.

I was thinking that the newer bios would support the newer i7-14700 cpu.

Unless I misread your post below, your PC has a 14700 and boots "normally" with BIOS 12.07.

What am I missing?

Secure boot only allows windows to boot from the configuration it was installed on.
Your new bios changed that.
I suspect that if you disable secure boot it will work.
indeed - secure boot was "enabled" will disable and try again. Thanks

I was thinking that since the 14700 was introduced AFTER the 12.07 bios, I should update the bios. Am I wrong?
