Unable to bypass Setup screen Iphone 5

Hi. So someone recently gave me an iphone 5 as they got a new phone. i wiped the phone and was unable to bypass the setup screen as you need a simcard. so i found an old nano sim put it in and it said the sim was invalid. i tried a friends Sim aswell and the same thing happened. I checked to see if the phone was unlocked via https://www.icloud.com/activationlock/, and activation lock is off. So why cant i activate the phone with any sim?

The iclould lock is not the same thing as a lock to the carrier the phone came from. Contact the carrier and make sure the phone is unlocked for another service. Also the phone service has to be compatible with the SIM. Can't use a Verizon SIM in an AT&T phone for example.
