[SOLVED] Unable to clone HDD to SDD

Hi,

I have a Thinkpad w550s bought in 2015 running Win 7 with 512 GB HDD.
I am trying to upgrade it to 1 TB Samsung EVO.
I attached the SSD using a SATA USB cable. Using Minitools Partition Wizard 10, I cloned the HDD to SSD.
In BIOS, I changed the boot order to USB SSD.
When I start the laptop, just after Windows screen, I get the blue screen.
I thought may be the clone didnt work well.
So I used Macrium Reflect software to clone the HDD to SDD.
In this case also, I get the blue screen.

Can you please suggest what could be the problem?
This is a brand new SSD. Do you think it could be corrupt?
A friend said may be the master boot record didnt get cloned properly. How can I test that?

I also tried removing the HDD and putting the SSD in the slot. In this case, i dont get a blue screen, but a single letter j on the top left side of black screen.

Any ideas would be really appreciated.

Try it again.
This time, when it the process finishes, power off, remove the old HDD, and put the SSD in its place.
Then boot up.

Specific steps for a successful clone operation:

Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive

If you are going from a smaller drive to a larger, by default, the target partition size will be the same as the Source. You probably don't want that
You can manipulate the size of the partitions on the target (larger)drive
Click on "Cloned Partition Properties", and you can specifiy the resulting partition size, to even include the whole thing

Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe all partitions on it.
This will probably require the commandline diskpart function, and the clean command.

Ask questions if anything is unclear.

Use the free samsung ssd migration app to copy the C drive to the new ssd.

I have used this app many times including thinkpads and it has never failed me.
Attach the ssd via your usb cable and do the copy.
It will be slow, think an hour or two.
When done open up the laptop and replace the HDD with the newly cloned ssd.
It should boot right up.

I used Samsung's data migration software and it worked like a charm.
For some reason, Minitools Partition Wizard and Macrium Reflect didnt work for me.
