Hi all. I have had several updates from Microsoft this past week and just in one day. I only install the Important or Critical Updates and I have them installed automatically at 3:A.M.
After they are downloaded, I am unable to connect to "IE 8".
Other than deleting them, I go to "System Restore" and set the Restore Date 3 hours prior to the Installation to 12:A.M. I am able to get connected Internet Explorer, but my Updates are gone. The next morning the same ones are Restored at 3:A.M. and I again am unable to connect to the Internet. The further back I go, more updates are removed. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Solution
I don't think they can with updates disabled. There is a setting to allow critical updates only though. Maybe that is turned on?

Good to hear it's working though.
Do the system restore. After that, do a manual check for updates. Install them 1 by 1. Check to see if you can connect to IE after each update. That will pinpoint which one is causing the problem.

After you find out which one it is, you can roll back the updates again. Then do a custom update. You can exclude that update and choose not to be notified of it again.

Thanks a lot. I'll try that.

I found the Update that is causing the problem. It's listed as an important Update. It is part of a "Cumulative Patch # KB976325. I looked it up on the "Microsoft Download Center". It appears to not even pertain to my Vista 32 System. What do you think?
Thanks,

youll be fine without it, i had that update, went back and found which update the culprit was, and i didnt download that update, everything is working perfectly fine for her. so i think you will be safe... i didnt look into the update much

For IE8/vista users, that's a critical update. It's a security patch for IE to patch flaws that can allow malicious code execution. You can read up on it here.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms09-072.mspx

Under the 'more information' header, there is a DEP install/uninstall 'fixit4me' option. The install may fix the connection problem (it might not).

The update only applies to IE. If the DEP fix doesn't fix the connection problem, you can choose to ignore the update. It only applies to IE. So if you aren't comfortable with leaving a security gap in IE, you can switch to firfox, chrome, or some other browser like that.

I'm sorry but when I go to the sight, I can't find "More Information". I may be looking right at it, but don't see it. Approx. where on the page is it? And when I find it, should I try to do the "Fix" before or after I install it.

Thanks a lot.

OK. I am on the page where it talks about my problem.
However, I cannot find a DEP or ?kbid=976325. I don't know if this makes a difference, the page is for "IE 7".
I typed my problem in the Internet Explorer 8. It too had people with the same problem as I do. However, on "IE 8" there is a "Fix it" icon but it has a different number than kb976325. under the Fix it icon.
Thanks, Phil

I tried the "Fix" but it would not correct it. Sometimes Microsoft "Hot Fixes".
Maybe there is one for that I can find. I left an E Mail at "Microsoft Tech Support".
I greatly appreciate your time and patience.

I will do that. However, I'm puzzled. When it is removed, I am unable to get to I Tunes or other sites I made shortcuts to my Desktop. They say unable to connect as Internet Explorer does. Is there a way to go fix that?
When I download Firefox, I don't want to "make it my primary browser" which they ask, right?
Phil

So if I decide to add that Update that blocks IE 8, and just use Mozilla, I can still access the other sites on my Desktop?

You can keep the update or not, it's your choice. If you are rolling back to IE7, I would remove it. It's meant to be a fix for IE8. If you go with firefox, you can leave the update on, and hope a future windows update will fix their 'fix'.

You can leave the update on, and use firefox. It shouldn't affect firefox's performance in any way. When you select firefox as your default browser, those links on your desktop should switch over to the firefox logo, meaning, they will open with firefox by default.

I think I understand but I am a bit confused. If I just leave the Update on the compute which I currently have done, You are saying I can make Firefox as my Default Browser. If making it as my Default Browser, It is in Internet Explorer. If it is in Internet Explorer, won't I still be vunerable not having the Update? Right now, Google is my Default Browser in Internet Explorer.

Ok, I see your confusion.

Firefox is an alternative browser to IE. It's independent from IE.

Google isn't a browser, it's a webpage. It's simply the default webpage that opens when you start your browser.

Here's the download page for Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html

You can download the install file and transfer it to your PC for installation. Or you can remove the problem patch, and use IE to download firefox. Once firefox is installed, you can roll back IE to version 7 or let the patch install again, and just not use IE.

Thanks a lot. I think I may just try to go back to "IE7". However, I'm having a hard time finding "IE7". Everything is 8. Any places I could look for 7.
Thanks,
Phil

I don't know what happened, but I just now got on the computer and in my Toolbar telling me there were updates installed. That update is installed and I have no problem with openng "IE 8". I had Automatic Updates disabled.
You don't think someone at Microsoft did it after I contacted their Tech Support and completed a form explaining what the problem was?
Phil

It sure is strange. You're right. After E Mailing you earlier, Microsoft E Mailed me directing me to their "Support" site. Thanks again for all your help.
Phil

Well, I lost "IE 8" due to that update. I went and made Firefox my Default Browser.
However, I'm trying to figure out how to E Mail a Link from the Internet. In Google in the upper right side of the Toolbar, there was "Page" when clicked on it dropped down allowing various things you could do such as E Mail Link or E Mail page. Is it possible to do this with Firefox? I hope you get this message since it was added to the previous subject .
Thanks,
Phil
