Unable to connect to internet via ethernet 5e

I just finished setting up a desktop with windows 7, updated with a factory made CAT5 5 foot cable to my modem with no problems. then moved the tower into my office where i ran a 36 foot CAT5e to the desk and now it wont connect. I brought the tower back out and reused the 5 foot and it worked. Ran it on multiple ports just in case with no fail. Tested the 36 foot run and passed with flying colors. you can see the link light for the port blinking so I know its trying but it just keeps saying unidentified network. Also tried restarting the modem and computer together and individually. Made sure DHCP was enabled. I even tried manual acquisition of IP address. Any help is appreciated.

It almost has to be a bad 36ft cable. The equipment can go to just over 300ft. Since it works on another cable using the same ports on both pieces of equipment it means that equipment is good.

Your best bet is to just buy another 36ft cable and hope it fixes it. If not then you have the nasty issue of the pc ethernet port being partially damaged and can only run short cables. Extremely unlikely so a cable will likely fix it.

If you built this cable yourself it is not uncommon to get a cable that looks perfectly fine and will even light the ports but not work. Even pro who build cable all day long will get one that does not work which is why they have expensive meters to test every cable. Since you do not have a meter all you can do is cut ends off and try again and hope it works better.

Normally I would agree but i made slack loops on both ends and redid them both twice now.
Im using an older but reliable digital display fluke tester. It shows all 4 pin groups good at 35 feet currently.

That is really bad because there is not much left other than bad interfaces in the computer. You are well inside the limitation of cable length.
