We currently have a host called resource in the ourCo.com
DNS zone pointing to a specific server so the
address: 'resource.ourCo.com' works correctly. My problem
is that someone in marketing sent out flyers with the
address: 'www.resource.ourCo.com'.

When I try and add a host or an alias I am unable to enter
the '.'

Is there a work around for this?

You will have to change "resource" from an address record (host) to a
subdomain. Delete the host named "resource" then right click in the zone,
select new domain, name it "resource", then add a host with the name field
left blank and a host named www.

.... because you haven't read the "How To" section of the product
documentation.
