Unable to detect Ethernet cable after upgrading to Win 8.1

After installing win 8 on a new computer with a z97 extreme 4 motherboard, I had no problems accessing the Internet, upon upgrading to win 8.1 I'm no longer able to. Going into
Device Manager, Network Adapters there are no shown LAN adapter options.

The bios and drivers have all been updated to the newest version. Regressing to win 8 solves the problem but is obviously not ideal. Help please!

did you update the LAN drivers after installing 8.1? you need to do that if you havent done that already...

Yes, the LAN drivers linked on the ASROCK Z97ex4 support page for win 8.1 (realtekLan(v8019)) returned the message "the Realtek Network Controller was not found". I also tried the Intel_Lan(v19.0c0042_pv drivers which also didn't work.
