So i got a laptop dell xps just to run kali linux on. Its like a 2012. I get it in the mail and it turns on runs fine. Someone has windows 10 on it with a pass-code so i try and install KALI over it. But the HDD the main HDD there is also an ssd in there but the HDD doesn't show up. I boot windows to recovery and try to factory reset it thinking that windows is protecting the drive. I do that and leave it for awhile and when i look at it again, i assume it finished it rebooted to a screen that said an OS wasn't detected on the drive. Im not sure whats going on but it still wont show up for me to install kali to. Any ideas?

So maybe you should ask the person you bought it from what the Windows password is.

Thats no longer the problem the HDD is wiped clean.

And booting from a Linux CD shows what?
A little hard to tell from your description.

I am able to go through the installation but when i get to select a drive the only drive that is there is the usb im booting from to install. I can also boot to OS from USB but cant install becuase HDD doesnt show up

Open the BIOS
Can you see the actual drives?

For fixed hdd it says WDC WD10JPVT-more *
then for m-sata it has the ssd Both are grayed out i cant hover over them

So...this is an old system. 2012.
I expect that the "mSATA SSD" is merely a cache drive for the HDD. Maybe 16 or 32GB max?
Not directly addressable by you, the user.

Maybe take that mSATA out and see what happens.

Or maybe you bought a busted laptop.

Its 128GIG but your right its a cache, ill try removing it and see what happeneds,
UPDATE right before i did that i tried again to boot from usb or cd and now the only boot options are onboard LAN ipv4 and ipv6 why cant i boot from cd or usb anymore? The status of the drive is disabled

I did that and its the same.
