Unable to install GTX 670 drivers, card not recognized by windows 8.1

Hey! I recently built a windows 8.1 rig with an old motherboard (msi 770-c45) and an asus gtx 670. The problem is that the Nvidia drivers refuse to install. "Nvidia installer cannot continue - this graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware".

I have searched everywhere, tried different drivers but almost all of them suggests that I either uninstall the card through Device Manager or copy/paste some ID from it. The problem is, that in this case, only the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" is available. I have uninstalled it several times. The card is working (picture through hdmi) so I doubt it's hardware-related.


My hdd contains nothing but the OS and the driver installation package. I have reset and updated BIOS on the motherboard.

Hello... after the OS is installed... you need to install the "Chipset drivers" next.

Not being able to find compatible hardware usually means that the device ID for the card is missing from the inf files that get installed. Nvidia's driver installer checks the device ID of any detected cards and compares it to those found in the inf files. If a match is located, it continues, otherwise spits out this error.

What driver version did you download? I have an eVGA GTX680 and the driver installed fine (I have version 331.65) and I know the entire 600 series of cards have been supported for quite awhile by Nvidia. Check to make sure you didn't grab a beta version, or a really old version. and definitely don't install the drivers from the included driver disk. They are almost always outdated by the time the card ships.

Edit: Oh, and chipset drivers do not need to be installed first. The video driver can be set up completely independent of any chipset drivers. that's not to say don't install them at all (definitely do install those as well), they just don't need to be in place first.

I have installed CCC (tried 2 different, one of them win8.1 beta), that's correct right?

I tried the latest (331.65), 327.23 and 301.42 (from the disk, I know, I freaked out).
Could this have anything to do with CMOS?

edit: Oh, the card has been placed under "Other Devices" in Device Manager as Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

We can modify the inf file so that it supports your card like it should, but I need to know the Device ID of your card. To find this, open Device Manager and go to the Video Card in its current state under Other Devices. Double click it and go to the Details tab. Set the Property drop down menu to "Hardware Ids". Right click and Copy the line that gives the Vendor, Device, and Subsys info (leave out the revision info as we shouldn't need that (the line that has "&REV_..." at the end)

For example, this is what you would see on my system:

The_Prophecy sent me a PM with instructions on how to manipulate the ID in the drivers but it didn't work.
I never managed to fix it. I think it's simply broken. I replaced the motherboard with a newer one and the problem persists.

I have a Dell XPS8500 with a GTX 660 video card. Problem is Windows 8.1. I had the same issue and tried everything. E.g turning off secure boot, updating BIOS, download numerous version of the NVidia drivers. Download Drivers from manufacturer DELL with same issues updated all drivers except the Nvidia due to setup file unable to find the card/Hardware. (Nvidia unable to find compatible hardware). Video card works fine as I have the monitor running off it but unable to play game and watch certain files /codecs and registering as 256MB. First the driver was hidden in device manager with !. Only the Microsoft Video drivers were working (Comment with unable to locate hardware or some to that effect) Uninstalled Geforce driver and display adapter totally disappear from Device Manager. Finally bit the bullet and dug up my recovery CDs and reinstalled Windows 8. Video card was back to Normal and was able to update the Nvidia drivers that didn't work in Windows 8.1 straight away 344.48 64 Nvidia 64bit version.
