My GPU i.e ATI Radeon HD 7970M is being detected as a Microsoft Basic display driver under display adapter in the device manager .Any attempts to install the latest drivers for this GPU have resulted in a system freeze up and becoming unresponsive .Forcing an improper shutdown and start up . I'm using an Alienware M17Xr4 Note book and just did a fresh re-install of windows 10 and now this is happening.Im wondering if my Ati Radeon HD 7970M series GPU has been busted ?.Help requested please, any one.

First off, it may be the Intel iGPU that's actually being detected.

Typically in laptop like that the Intel iGPU is first detected, then Microsoft updates the basic driver with a better INTEL driver but also installs the proper driver for the OTHER dGPU.

Did you wait for MICROSOFT UPDATES to finish so it would download and install what it thought best?

If that doesn't work, then I'd try to install different drivers from the AMD site ( let it auto-scan).

I think THIS one is correct though:
https://support.amd.com/en-us/download/mobile?os=Windows%2010%20-%2064

So...
1) use DDU to remove drivers http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html
2) let MS Updates completely finish (Start, settings, update and security)
3) install new drivers from AMD

Also, the AMD GPU shouldn't be used unless a game or application is on a LIST... not sure how you tell but you need to find out of the AMD GPU is kicking in or not for the programs you use.

Should also be a LIST you can add a game EXE to if it's not starting due to not being on the list.

@photonboy-I tried downloading and installing the updated drivers both through Microsoft Updates and through the official AMD website. Both times during installation of the driver's my system hung up and became unresponsive, forcing an improper shutdown and restart . Windows 10 logo screen would hang up or they would be a dark screen after that. I've had to go through the windows auto repair system to start windows from a restore point .At which point everything is back to square one . But then windows boots up fine. The GPU is still listed as a primary display driver after that. Not being able to figure out what the issue is with the GPU?

I think its a courted 10 instal can happen. An idea suggestion I am an AMD forum member & know my way with laptops & 10 would be, Reinstall 10 fresh the 1709 update has been horrendously bad with AMD drivers atm, just get 10 upto date before you do anything. Put a pause on 10 updates then backdoor it threw device manager & when you get the option to update videocards for updates. Manually look for drivers as 10 will download other drivers missed & then pull the exact spewcs of your card & load up those matching drivers.

@plumboby-I don't understand what you mean by "just get 10 upto date before I do anything. Then put a pause on those updates to manually update the GPU drivers"?.The reason is because the windows 10 version I did a fresh re-install of is already an updated version to the build 1709.Yes I do see accumulated security and device updates that windows 10 needs to install. Like my Intel GPU was automatically updated to the latest drivers through that update process .When my system asks for a restart. But somehow windows 10 is not being able to download the proper drivers for the AMD Ati GPU. I've tried to download updated drivers for it in device manager .Where it is being detected as a "Microsoft primary display driver".During installation of those drivers my system held up and became unresponsive forcing an improper shutdown of my system and then restart. The same thing happened when I tried to install the latest driver from the AMD website for the HD 7970 M series. Both attempts of downloading and installing an updated driver for it has held up my system rendering it completely unresponsive forcing an improper shutdown by pressing down on the power switch . So I've manually tried to update the drivers for it but unsuccessful. What updates should I stop that windows 10 automatically downloads and installs? .Are you saying I again do a re-install of an updated windows 10?
