I'm trying to reinstall Windows 8 on a new hard drive after the old one had severe problems and could no longer boot, even after a system reset (reformat + automated reinstall from recovery partition). Its a Lenovo laptop that has a Win8 license built in.

I used the official Windows Installation Media tool to create what I thought would be a bootable install usb stick for the chosen OS. Is that not what it is?

I've made sure about the boot order, setting the usb stick first. The filesystem is fat32. There is a MBR and the partition is set bootable and active. Do the install.esd and boot.wim files need to be on the root ofthe usb? They were placed in a folder called Sources, along with two blank text files, and no other folders. Does that sound right? How can I get this working... hope someone can help.
